LIke oral surgeons and orthodontists, endodontists are dental specialists. There are 4150 endodontist in the United States as of 2008. Endodontists are dentists who have a dental degree, and who have two or more additional years of endodontic education and clinical training. During this education they review hundreds of classic and current research articles in this specialty. After completion of their specialty they receive an American Association of Endodontics Certification which allows them to limit their practice solely to endodontics. There are, as of 2008, 804 Board Certified Endodontists in the United States and 20 in the State of Georgia. To achieve Board Certification a dentist must have a certificate in endodontics, and pass a rigorous battery of exams including written, case histories, and oral exams over a two year period. Endodontists perform routine and complex endodontic (root canals) procedures, diagnoses, endodontic surgery, Internal bleaching, root canal reteatment, and traumatic injury management. Since endodontists see and treat only root canal cases their experience and the sheer volume of patients seen for endodontic problems gives them a special insight.
